Jesus was talking with His disciples about what opinions people had about Him. Peter got it right: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God!” Jesus blessed him and then said upon this rock of truth, “I will build my church!” (Mt 16:16-18) From that time, Jesus began to explain how He must go to Jerusalem and suffer and be killed, then be raised up on the third day. Here we learn some basic truths about the pre-denominational church of Christ.
1. It is built on Christ. Not on the latest tools and techniques, nor upon Peter or any man or man-made rules, system or name.
2. It is built on His sacrifice, His suffering and death on the cross. Paul wrote later: “The church of God which He purchased with His own blood” (Acts 20:28). How much is His church worth? It is worth the price He paid to purchase it.
3. It is too strong for Hades (or Hell) to defeat. If we follow His methods even to the point of sacrifice and suffering, we will gain the victory (I Jn 5:4).
