CHAIN OF AUTHORITY

“The head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God” (I Cor 11:3). In the threefold step from woman to man to Christ to God, it may appear surprising that Paul began at the center. Why? In speaking of the subordination of woman to her husband, first Paul speaks to man with a reminder that he himself is subordinated to Christ. It is clear in Eph 5:22- 33 that the subjection of wives to their husbands was coupled with the sternest commandments with regard to the husband’s duty to the wife. Every organism must have a head. God’s basic unit of all civilization is the family, and the head must be either the man or the woman. God commanded man to fulfill that function. A matriarchal society is not God’s plan. Christ is equal to the Father (Phil 2:6), but even the Godhead itself could not function without the subordination of the Son. Just so, the headship of the man does not set aside the equality of male and female. The same equality should exist between a man and his wife as exists between the Father and the Son.
