DOCTRINE
A young preacher said, “I’m not much on doctrine.” What an amazing statement! This word doctrine is found in I and II Timothy and Titus. It means teaching. The preacher was actually saying he was not much on teaching … not much on teaching the great fundamental doctrines of the Bible to return to pure New Testament Christianity in name, worship, salvation.
“Doctrine” (Gk didaskalia) is used 15 times by Paul in his 3 letters to young preachers. There was “sound doctrine” (I Tim 1:10; II Tim 4:3; Tit 1:9; 2:1), “good doctrine” (I Tim 4:6), “doctrine of God” (Tit 2:10; I Tim 6:1), opposed, contrary to “doctrines of devils” (I Tim 1:10; 4:1). Some “will not endure sound doctrine” (2 Tim 4:3; Tit 2:1). Timothy was warned: “Take heed … to the doctrine,” pay attention to it (I Tim 4:13, 16), contrasted with those who did not proclaim “the doctrine” (I Tim 1:7; 4:1-2). Sound doctrine is ignored or abandoned to please “itching ears” of those who prefer “fables” (2 Tim 4:3-4).
They have departed from “the faith” (I Tim 4:1-2). Test preachers (Ac 17:11; 1 Jn 4:1) … many of them are false!
