Thank you for your letter last week. You say the Catholic Church was founded by Christ and then gave us the Bible. If that be true, is it not strange that the Roman Catholic Church is never mentioned in the Bible? Nor any pope, hierarchy, ecumenical council, unmarried bishops or clergy, infant sprinkling for baptism, celibate priesthood, priest called “Father,” worship of Mary, monks, clergy, headquarters in Rome, cardinals, praying through Mary and the saints, adoration of images, clerical dress, mass, holy water, incense, purgatory, transubstantiation, instrumental music in worship, rosary and a hundred other non-biblical things? We are warned not to change or add to the Bible (Gal 1:6-10; Jude 3). History books tell us the date when each innovation began. Example, the first man to declare himself universal bishop or pope was Gregory I, 590-604 AD. The apostle Peter was prominent, not pre-eminent, was never called pope. No apostle had a successor. Peter was married. He would not allow anyone to bow down to him. He cursed and later sinned and was opposed to his face by Paul (Gal 2:11-14, I Cor 9:6; Acts 10:26).
