BAPTISM: NON–ESSENTIAL?
“Mr. Jennings: Can a person not be saved on an airplane or while driving down the interstate? I thought God was big enough to save, no matter what the circumstance. Thanks. Andy.”
Your question has been asked by many others who believe salvation is by faith only. They deny baptism (immersion) is essential.
Both faith and baptism are required for salvation.“Without faith it is impossible to please God” (Heb 11:6). “Baptism now saves you” (I Pet 3:21). Jesus said: “He that believes and is baptized shall be saved” (Mk 16:15-16). The people in Jerusalem were convicted (believed) they had sinned by killing Jesus. They asked, “What shall we do?” Peter answered: “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins” (Acts 2:38). Saul of Tarsus was not saved on the road when he believed on the Lord, but was told “be baptized and wash away your sins” (Acts 22:16). Was he saved before his sins were washed away?
Paul preached “the obedience of faith,” a “faith that works through love” (Gal 5:6; Rom 1:5). The Romans were buried with Christ in baptism” and then “were set free from sin.” In this way they were “saved by grace through faith” (Rom 6:3,4,18; 10:9-10).
