OMG
“Oh My God” is an expression commonly heard among the worldly, those who make no effort to be God’s people. It is now heard in popular TV shows, heard so often it may be concluded the people have been coached to use the expression.
God’s name and the name of Jesus must be held sacred by all believers.
Number three of the Ten Commandments reads: “You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.” (Ex 20:7, NRSV) Reader’s Digest stated: “If God had texted the Ten Commandments … for number three we would find No OMGs!” The name of God is to be “exalted above all blessing and praise.” (Neh 9:5)
In the model prayer of Jesus, He said: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed by your name.” (Mt 6:9) If we do not show respect and reverence for God, we are “taking the name of the Lord in vain.” (Ex 5:11, KJV and ASV) They are thus “empty words” when we use His holy name. The Hebrew scribes who copied the scriptures would stop and ritually purify themselves with water before writing God’s name. It is using God’s name in vain if it does not carry meaning and respect for Him.
“Holy and awesome (reverend) is His name.” (Psa 111:90)
