PETER ON PENTECOST

Acts chapter two is considered to contain the most important sermon in all the Bible! Jesus had just been crucified and devout Jews from every nation were gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the day of Pentecost. God sent miracles to draw attention to Peter and the other apostles. Thousands heard them preaching in their own native languages. Peter’s sermon was recorded for us. He began by explaining that these events had been prophesied by Joel (2:28-32).
Peter boldly accused these people of murdering the Son of God with wicked hands, nailing him to the cross. But, he said, God raised him up from the dead to be Lord and Christ, now seated at God’s right hand. This had also been prophesied by David. The crowd was convicted of sin. They cried out, “What shall we do?”
Peter replied: “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Those who accepted his words were immersed in water and about 3,000 were added to their number that day. They continued to listen to the apostles teaching, to breaking bread (the Lord’s Supper) and to praying. This was the birthday of the church of Christ. People were added to it every day!
