HEART IN THE BIBLE

In the Bible the heart is spoken of as the center of man or the “inner man.” It is the chief organ of physical life, and came to stand for man’s entire mental and moral activity, both rational and emotional. The heart (kardia, in Greek) is the “center of all physical and spiritual life.” It is the source of the affections, thoughts, passions, desires, appetites and purposes of man. There are “thoughts and intents of the heart” (Heb 4:12). Belief comes from the heart (Rom 10:10) and purposes come from there (Acts 11:23; 2 Cor 9:7). The heart can become desperately wicked” (Jer 17:9), or one can be “pure in heart” (Mt 5:8). God searches the heart (Jer 17:10; Rom 8:27). It is little wonder that the psalmist prayed, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer” (Psa 19:14).
Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things; and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things” (Mt 12:34-3). David said: “Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee” (Psa 119:11).
