Jesus Christ Super Star
In this age the truth of God is taken lightly with many even denying His existence (Gen 1). God Himself must be angered by the wicked portrayal of Jesus Christ in this Rock Opera. This musical is popular, but also blasphemous (“impious utterance or action concerning God or sacred things … defaming.”) Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice produced this rock opera, creating a Jesus diametrically opposed to the truthful Son of God as found in the Bible (2 Cor 11 :4 ). Changing truth into falsehood is sin (vs 5).
The opera makers said they viewed Jesus as a “super prophet,” but not god in any sense, rather as a ‘legend with great flaws.’ It is not a presentation of the biblical Jesus, but rather a distorted view through the eyes of Judas, prompted by the devil. Scripture affirms Jesus as God (I Tim 2:5; Jn 1:1-3, 14; 20:30-31; 2 Jn 3).
The opera suggests Jesus and Mary Magdalene were in a sexually immoral relationship whereas in truth Jesus was “holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners” (Heb 7:26; 4:15). To suggest Mary was sexually immoral is to lie (Prov 12:22).
One scene shows Jesus sending people away who needed healing: “Leave me alone!” Instead, the Lord had compassion and healed all the sick (Mt 9:36; 11:28).
The opera put Jesus on the cross as a defeated, deceived crazy man, with no mention at all of His victorious resurrection! (Rev 1: 18; Rom 14:9). He is not a super star, but Creator, Lord and Savior.
